The Sustainable Carolina Farm and Garden is a partnership between the Office of Sustainability, Sustainable Carolina and the Green Quad Learning Community. In 2007, it began as a set of student garden boxes. Today, it’s a successful student-run urban farm and agribusiness.
The CCF&G fosters student development outside the classroom of the University of South Carolina through service, leadership development, teaching and entrepreneurship while promoting a healthy lifestyle.
One of the projects CCF&G promotes is Naturally Carolina. The student-run staff collects waste food oil from campus dining facilities to produce biodiesel. The fuel, used in campus vehicles, is also used to create soap. The waste product from the fuel, glycerin, is converted to Biosoap, sold locally and online.
The soap promotes sustainability as it is made completely with local and organic products. Naturally Carolina’s gentle soap is handcrafted from organic oils and butters for everyday use. Ingredients include glycerin, organic olive oil, coconut oil, palm oil, coconut milk, cocoa butter, Shea butter, honey and mint essential oils. The soap is not made with artificial fragrances, preservatives or harsh chemicals.
The soap is available in various scents: warm lavender, lifting lemon, cool mint, zesty lime, cinnamon spice and wonderful winter. The shapes of the soap are unique and come in small, medium or large sizes. The soap can be printed with either the Palmetto Tree, the Gamecock logo or South Carolina initials, ranging from $5–30.
