Most reasonable travelers aim to fill every square inch of their suitcases (up to the maximum weight allowance, of course). But skim packers who only take the bare minimum with them during their travels can now benefit from unused space in their luggage. A new app will pay travelers to carry packages for others who would otherwise spend hundreds on shipping fees.
Airmule is a user-friendly app that pays people up to $300 (which can nearly match or match the cost of a plane ticket) to carry packages from the United States to China. Both shippers and mules must register on the app and provide credentials including proof of American residency and an American bank account. Mules can enter their travels plans via the app and accept messages from other users who are seeking to ship items, currently only to China.
Both shippers and mules will have tracking capabilities, and the mule can upload photos to prove the package arrived at its destination safely. Shippers, mules and recipients will also have access to a group chat to ensure the safe and secure transfer of goods.
TSA approved Airmule’s shipping partners and will screen all packages that travel onboard the aircraft. Mules are able to inspect all packages before traveling, as well.
For shippers, shipping fees start at $10 per pound and each item is protected by insurance against loss or damage up to $200.
