Few things conjure up not so gentle stirrings of American nostalgia like the city of Philadelphia and speakeasies. So why not combine them? Throughout the city, there are a few of these that will provide the atmosphere you are craving. Unfortunately, many of the speakeasies found in Philadelphia are members-only deals, which is fine if you know someone. But, if you are just in town for a few nights and want to make the best of things, this is not welcoming.
If you have to narrow it down to one, try The Franklin Mortgage & Investment Company. According to its story, this place was once the front for the largest alcohol ring during the Prohibition era. The gangster Max “Boo Boo” Hoff was more successful than Al Capone when it came to the strong stuff. So, this elegant bar is a fitting setting for celebrating anything, including the end of Prohibition. Find the stairs that take you below street level and try the Hermit’s Revenge or a Lords of the Night, just two of the custom cocktails they are known for. There are many, many more.
In reality, the best speakeasy in Philadelphia is the Hop Sing Laundromat, but they are press shy. So go find them and be sure to turn off your phone and wear nice shoes.
