Reviews / Hotel

Located in Paris’s charming Montparnasse neighborhood, Hotel Mercure Paris Gare Montparnasse delivers in location what it lacks in luxury experience.

A mid-scale hotel, it’s on a busy street with several theaters and cafés, within comfortable walking distance from several of the nearby attractions (such as the Parisian catacombs). There are also several close market in case you want to buy some snacks or a bottle of wine. The street in front of the hotel particularly becomes lively at night and one of my favorite aspects of my street-facing guestroom was the ability to open up the windows to the warm weather and people watch.

While the lobby (colorful, with funky furniture like a couch modeled after a giant pair of lips) had been refurbished; during my stay, the guestrooms were only partially remodeled and my guestroom was one of the few that had yet to receive an upgrade. The furniture — a double bed, dresser and table and two chairs — was old and suffered from overuse, but was by no means bad. It was nice to have a table with chairs in the guestroom. The bathroom was large, with the toilet tucked away in a separate space.

The one incident I did experience while there was the in-room hair dryer catching on fire. The staff seemed somewhat unperturbed by this fact, but they did send someone up to replace it.

The on-site restaurant is Le Bistrot De L’Echanson, a small and colorful eatery with a large bar in the middle of the room (one cute touch was the bowler hats hanging above the bar as light fixtures). This style of restaurant seems to be similar to others among the Mercure brand. The food ranges from burgers to risotto to salads, and you can get a nice glass of wine or other drinks for a reasonable price. While I wouldn’t go out of my way to dine there, it was definitely nice having the option while staying at the hotel.

Again, the best part of Hotel Mercure Paris Gare Montparnasse was the location and easy access to the rest of the neighborhood.

It’s time to start dreaming of your next trip. Here are seven must-see sites in Curaçao.

The Argosaronic Islands Are Calling

The Saronic or Argo Saronic Islands of Greece call travelers to explore its seven small islands and islets brimming with history, natural sites and more. With most easily accessible by boat, the islands’ proximity to ports of Athens make the Saronic Islands an ideal destination for those preferring shorter boat rides. In fact, trips from Athens ports to the islands take only between 10 minutes and two hours, depending on the island you choose, making them perfect for day or weekend trips.

You’re in between flights and ready to find a coffee and your next gate and settle in. But then you find the signs to your gate and look down the impossibly long corridor and wonder how you managed to have the gate at the opposite end of the airport.
