Most major cities are equipped with a Little Italy. New York, Chicago, Philadelphia — all of these are known to have a deep history with the culture of Italian immigrants. Cleveland does not come up as often. It is known primarily for its Slavic, German and Irish populations, but there is a rich history of Italian ingenuity in this city and its Little Italy neighborhood puts this on fine display.
Located in Cleveland’s Murray Hill area on the east side close to Case Western Reserve University, the Cleveland Museum of Art and downtown, Little Italy has its roots in the mid-19th century. The first resident is widely regarded as the artist Joseph Carrabelli so it is only fitting the area is known for its galleries and restaurants.
One of the oldest restaurants in Cleveland is Guarino’s. A speakeasy in the 1920s, this restaurant maintains its charm as a house restaurant to all residents and visitors of the area. For an espresso and something extra, visit Presti’s Bakery and Café. There are numerous galleries to see as you walk through the neighborhood. Visit the Holy Rosary Church in August and see the annual Feast of the Assumption festival. The art walks in fall and winter are also a pleasure to experience. The next time you are in Cleveland, or just driving through it, take a moment to roll down Murray Hill and enjoy some hospitality.
