Sleepy, fog-shrouded Westport, Wash., is primarily a fishing town. But one of its quiet charms is the excellent surfing here; enthusiasts come from around the region to test their skills in the cold but consistent waves just offshore.

While there are a handful of ramshackle hotels and motels in town, by far the most attractive and welcoming spot to lay your head is the new Loge at The Sands, located a short drive from downtown. The recently renovated classic motel oozes vintage charm, with its surfing-themed rooms sporting bright hues and Mid-Century Modern touches.

Whether you surf or not, there’s a lot to love about this spot. There are multiple sites to hook up your camper or pitch your tent if you’re looking to save money and avoid shelling out for a hotel room; still, the rooms here are reasonable and designed to share with friends. Each has two queen beds and a pull-out couch, so you can easily split the cost with a group.

The motel is working hard to be a resort offering plenty of reasons to hang out. Outdoor grills and seating are welcoming places to hang out. Concerts and movie nights are often on the calendar, and a small café pours craft beer and serves coffee and sandwiches by day.

And, should you want to try your hand at surfing — or stand-up paddleboarding or kayaking — the Loge offers rentals at reasonable prices. Wet suits, too. If you bring your own or plan to surf multiple days, there’s a drying room for added convenience.
