Do you have an interest in archaeology and the sea? If these are two of your great loves, you will want to think about joining the Nautical Archaeological Society This society started back in the 1960s to encourage communication between divers and marine archaeologists. Over the decades it has grown into a member society supported all over the world.
Grounded in Portsmouth, U.K., the Nautical Archaeological Society takes part in educational efforts, conservation and education. Some of these are more than what you expect. There is the adopt a wreck scheme, perfect for diver clubs who would like to take official control of a wreck they may know about and visit often. Any data collected through this program can be contributed to the NAS’s knowledge of maritime site. There are more than 120 wrecks adopted so far.
If you live in the U.K., there is also a diving club run through NAS. It aims to help divers develop skills that will serve them well when exploring new wrecks. Most of these events take place off the southern coast of England. You can sign up for a free newsletter, but for $30–90 you can apply for varying kinds of memberships that give you access to news, but also job and grant opportunities around the world in the field of maritime archaeology.
