One of the best ways to experience St. Augustine, Fla., is to get out on the water. Surprisingly, there are only a few spots you can rent a watercraft, and Anastasia Water Sports is one of the best places to do so.
Located in gorgeous Anastasia State Park, the water sports spot offers canoes, stand-up paddle boards and Hobie Cat catamaran sailboats. The latter can only be rented by an experienced sailor and must be rented at high tide to avoid damaging the native oyster beds just offshore. If you’re unsure if your trip falls in that time, be sure to call in advance to find out if you can sail— otherwise you risk wasting a trip.
The area you can paddle or sail is fairly small, but it’s beautiful. You might spot a group of dolphins feeding, and you’re certain to see countless osprey, an impressive bird of prey that lives in large numbers in this area. And you’ll see the historic St. Augustine Lighthouse nearby.
The center charges by the hour, but they’re generous with the timing, allowing you a grace period of about 15 minutes to set up and get going. Knowledgeable staff will also make sure you’re comfortable before you set out.
