A welcome departure from Kaua’i’s collection of luxury resorts bursting with boisterous families, the Fern Grotto Inn, tucked along a leafy branch of the Wailua River, is a charming option for your vacation — as long as you don’t mind going without a pool.

What it lacks in swimming options, Fern Grotto makes up for with plenty of other attractive elements. The property is a collection of early 20th-century plantation cottages, each one beautifully updated and outfitted with modern comforts like plush bedding and televisions. Each comes with a full kitchen or kitchenette, ideal for making use of the property’s many tropical fruit trees. There are also outdoor grills in a central garden, a beautiful, flower-filled spot to enjoy a meal or read a book.

The property also offers complementary bikes and boogie boards for use at the beach, a short drive, walk or cycle away. And there are two kayaks you can easily drop in the river for a foray to Uluwehi Falls, a must for able travelers looking for a half-day adventure. You’ll be able to skip the pricey and crowded tours and enjoy a paddle all to yourself.

Fern Grotto Inn is also perfectly positioned along the east coast of Kaua’i. You’ll be able to get to major attractions easily from this jumping off point, and the friendly owners are helpful with suggestions for dining and activities.

The property offers rentals of different sizes — come as a couple, or as a family. There’s something for everyone here, and it’s an experience you won’t soon forget.
