Two foodies living in the Northern Liberties neighborhood of Philadelphia, Pa., Ellen Mogell and Jeb Woody, opened Honey’s Sit N’ Eat in 2005.
The elevated Southern-inspired and eclectic menu offers a broad range of comfort food from banana coconut vegan French toast and Jeb’s open-faced biscuit sandwich, to fried cauliflower and aToad in a Hole.
The flagship location in Northern Liberties provides a cozy dining room lined with memorabilia along the walls and a diner-style bar. The restaurant is open for breakfast, brunch and lunch and is cash only.
The menu is so packed with incredible options I had a difficult time choosing. After extensively reading the menu, I opted for a hearty vegetable soup and roasted Brussels sprouts special. As a vegetarian, I was impressed with the wide variety of options for practically any dietary need.
The soup was $3.50 for a hefty portion and the Brussels were enough for two to share. They were roasted to the point of crispy, and came with a roasted beet spread for dipping. The vegetable side was $4 and, with my bottomless La Colombe coffee at $2.75, the entire meal cost just more than $10.
Everything is homemade with fresh ingredients, and local when possible. I will definitely go again for brunch, or even dinner, served only at the South Street location.
