Reviews / Restaurant

Space is hard to find in Midtown Manhattan, and those who are not used to it can find the crowds to be overwhelming. But Italian restaurant Maria Pia on West 51st Street turns this inconvenience into a charming asset as patrons dine side by side on classic Italian dishes.

Located in New York’s theater district, walking into Maria Pia feels like walking into a private dining room of an acclaimed Italian chef. White tablecloths cover dining surfaces as servers wind through the limited empty spaces with trays of prosecco and vino.

Per standard Italian restaurant regimen, the menu is divided into antipasti, insalate, followed by pasta, carne (meat) and pesce (seafood). The Italian fish stew (cioppino) is a Maria Pia highlight and is served with garlic peasant bread for sopping up any leftover liquid.

A daily lunch prix fixe menu and a nightly prix fixe menu are available for $15.95 and $26.95, respectively, and include three courses: a soup or salad; a main dish; and dessert such as tiramisu or hazelnut gelato.

The attentive staff and meal-ending cappuccinos provide a dose of authenticity and hospitality to this Manhattan watering hole. Call ahead for reservations as the tiny dining room and adjacent covered patio fill up fast, especially on weekends.
