Rooster Soup Company is one of Philadelphia’s new restaurants, serving up tasty food for a good cause. The concept for the restaurant came about in 2014. The owners of Federal Donuts wanted to find a way to make use of the more than 500 pounds of unused chicken parts they produced daily. The team came up with the idea of making soup. They took this a step further and decided to open a restaurant serving this soup — and other items — with 100 percent of the profits going to local charity Broad Street Ministry’s Hospitality Collective.
I dined at the luncheonette for lunch on its sixth day of operation. My friend and I sat at the counter, as there was a wait for a table. The menu boasts many diner classics. I finally decided on the soup and sandwich special. I ordered the matzo ball soup and tuna melt. My soup arrived quickly. Rooster Soup Company adds dill to the soup, giving a fresh spin to the traditional flavor. Shortly after finishing my soup, my tuna melt arrived. The tuna salad was made with a mildly spicy slaw and topped with provolone cheese on brioche bread. Chips came on the side. As we enjoyed our meals, we noticed a delicious-looking pie at a nearby table. Our friendly waiter overheard us and recommended we try the coconut cream pie special. We decided to split a slice. It was one of the best pies I’ve ever tasted. It was creamy, flaky, sweet and smooth. I easily could’ve devoured the entire slice myself.
Rooster Soup Company is a unique Philadelphia spot for a great meal for a great cause.
