Newark (EWR) is home to three United Club Lounges. There are two in Terminal C, where my flight was scheduled to leave, and I chose to visit the one opening at 4:30 a.m. My flight left at 6 a.m., and my husband insisted we arrive extra early, in case of long security lines. As luck would have it, we were in and out of security in about five minutes.
The lounge was surprisingly busy when the doors opened. However, the space by no means felt crowded, and I wasn’t forced to wait in line for breakfast. The small selection of food included oatmeal, granola, pastries, yogurt and fresh fruit. Juices and hot coffee were also available. I grabbed a bite and sat down by one of the windows to watch the arriving and departing planes.
Though the lounge was definitely large, I found the décor and furnishings to feel slightly outdated. Between the United Club Lounge at Chicago (ORD) and this particular lounge at Newark, there was simply no competition. Of course, the other lounges in the airport could possibly offer an updated experience and vibe.
Further exploration of the space revealed an empty bar and televisions playing early morning infomercials, a family room and lots of quiet, private workspaces for business travelers. One wall offered a variety of reading material, including Global Traveler.
One of the perks to owning a United MileagePlus card is a free yearly trip to a United Club Lounge. However, entry without a card is only $59, a price I would definitely pay if I were stuck in the airport for several hours.
