Instead of flocking to Cancun or Panama City Beach for spring break, think about doing something different with your time.
Spring break doesn’t have to mean wild parties in well-trodden beach destinations. That’s not to say you should go to a teetotal yoga retreat, but try thinking beyond the obvious choices.
If you do want some beach time, consider Tulum in Mexico. It’s quieter than Cancun, with fewer high-rise hotels, but there are still plenty of backpackers around if you fancy a party. Plus there are some amazing Mayan ruins just up from the beach, so history students can claim some educational benefits.
Closer to home, spring break is the perfect opportunity to explore some of the U.S. National Parks. Yellowstone and Yosemite are huge favorites, while Joshua Tree is convenient for those in southern California.
Other people like to devote their time to those less fortunate than themselves, taking part in volunteering trips. While there is plenty that needs to be done around the United States, such trips are also popular to places such as Guatemala. It’s close enough to be cheap and convenient to reach, but the cultural differences make you feel a world away from home.
You don’t have to fall into the stereotype this spring break. While there is nothing wrong with some booze-fueled partying, there are plenty of other things to do within easy reach.
