The August heat is here. Hot and humid summers pose risk and working outdoors during summer’s dog days is no walk in the park. The combination of scorching temperatures and oppressive humidity can be deadly, and in the United States alone up to 1,700 people die from heat exposure. Know how to recognize the signs of heat illness and take preventive action to reduce your risk.

When the heat index reaches triple digits, it’s important to find ways to keep cool. Have you made plans for your summer getaway yet? Will you be relaxing in the air conditioning or on a beach with a drink in your hand? If you plan to stick out the heat at home, we have some ways on how to beat the August heat.

Wear loose-fitting clothing when possible. Your body can’t cool itself efficiently if you wear tight or heavy clothing. Loose and light clothing helps prevent overheating.

Shield your skin from the sun. Sunburn makes it more difficult for your body to cool itself, so always wear sunglasses and sunscreen.

Drink plenty of fluids. When you’re dehydrated, the risk of overheating increases; be sure to consume enough water to help your body produce sweat and keep you cool.

If possible, stay inside during the hottest parts of the day. Sometimes it’s better to just avoid the heat entirely and stay where it’s air-conditioned. For exercise during peak times, visit a local gym or pool.

Ease into a warmer environment. When traveling or relocating, it can take a while to adjust. Avoid activity during the warmest parts of the day until you’re used to the increased temperature.

Enjoy indoor activities. Instead of spending all day outside, head to the movie theater, mall or bowling alley.
