Beginner’s Guide to Coffee in Italy

Italians are particular (and proud) about coffee. Be sure to know the basics before attempting to order on your next trip to Italy, and look like a pro. Here are some of the standard orders for coffee lovers. Be advised, any orders with milk are meant for the morning, and you will get a funny look ordering one past noon.

 

Un Caffé: One shot of espresso, the standard order

 

Un Caffé Macchiato: Espresso with a drop of milk

 

Un Caffé Americano: Espresso with added hot water

 

Un Cappuccino: An espresso with steamed milk and cacao powder, this is a morning drink only for Italians

 

Un Caffé Freddo: Iced coffee for those missing their Starbucks fix

 

Order and pay at the till, then drink at the bar like an Italian. Most orders are never more than €2 and all come in the same size, so don’t try to order a venti. Don’t worry, though, you’ll be getting plenty of caffeine.

 

Italians are known for their leisurely attitudes — coffee here is meant to be enjoyed and savored, so no to-go cups.

United Continues Its Global Expansion

United Airlines keeps soaring to new heights, recently announcing another expansion of its leading global route network. The airline added new non-stop flights between Newark (EWR) and Marrakesh (RAK), Morocco; Tokyo (NRT) and Cebu (CEB), Philippines; and Houston (IAH) and Medellin (MDE), Colombia. That’s not all: United also plans to increase flights to popular worldwide destinations including Hong Kong (HKG); Seoul (INC), South Korea; and Porto (OPO), Portugal. Following the recent agreement to increase flights between the U.S. and Chinese governments, the airline now adds four weekly flights from Los Angeles (LAX) to Shanghai (PVG).
