The art scene in Berlin is buzzing, and there are plenty of galleries large and small. For contemporary art, head to the Mitte district and the CFA – Contemporary Fine Arts. Since 1996, the gallery has presented established and emerging artists, and its reputation continues to grow.
Urban Spree is another gallery worth checking out, and the venue also houses a concert room and event space. Street and graffiti artists are prominent, as are photographers and contemporary artists. It’s even got a beer garden attached.
You should also visit the Sammlung Boros Collection, housed in a World War II bomb shelter. Entrance is only possible on the weekends with an appointment, which adds a sense of mystery to proceedings. Tracey Emin and Wolfgang Tillmans are among those to have exhibited here.
EIGEN + ART is a space with a long history of exhibiting provocative works, and founder Gerd Harry Lybke started his career hosting secret banned exhibitions in his flat in East Germany. On the same street is KW Institute for Contemporary Art, responsible for organizing the successful Berlin Biennale. With four floors of exhibits and a program of regular events, the KW is a must-see for visitors.
