The dating scene has greatly changed over the past several years, but one element remains the same: blind dates.

Dating is hard and while dating apps like Tinder, Bumble and Coffee Meets Bagel make it slightly easier, no one ever really enjoys the first date — especially if you’re going in blind. Perhaps the hardest part of a blind date is the greeting. In today’s world, there is no real blind date anymore because all you need to do is search on social media and you’ll find everything.

If you’re out in the dating world, blind dates are sort of a necessary evil. On one hand, you’re meeting someone you don’t know and that seems daring, but on the other, it could turn out they are not your type and your hands are tied for the rest of the evening.

All said and done, everyone should experience at least one blind date in their lives. After all, it’s an adventurous experience that may work in your favor; if not, you have a great story. We’ve compiled a few tips to help you have a happy blind date experience.

Be Flexible in Your Expectations

Try to avoid having high or low expectations from the date. Head into the date with an open mind; try to think of it as if you’re going to meet a friend. If the chemistry clicks, good for you. Even otherwise, you won’t feel disappointed walking away from the date after meeting a potential friend.

Bug Your Matchmaker

If you’re being set up by a friend, ask them about your date’s personality, so you know what to talk about during the date. If you met your date online, check the dating site and read up on their interests — maybe you have a mutual friend in common you could ask for advice.

Don’t Be Rude

If you find out you and date are complete opposites with nothing in common, continue to show respect. Be pleasant and finish the date with a happy memory, even if it wasn’t a fairytale ending. Continue to talk about your life with positivity and passion, despite not being into the person; you’ll feel great afterwards.

Choose Your Outfit Wisely

Dress for the blind date you want, not the date blind date you have. Pick an outfit in which you feel comfortable; stick with it.

Pick a Good Spot

Think of some of your favorite spots and don’t be shy about suggesting them. Ambiance goes a long way when nerves are involved. Consider getting drinks instead of dinner, it’s less of a commitment for all parties.

Consider Safety

Any good survivalist knows safety is crucial. Text a friend where you are and even screenshot the person you’re meeting up with. Be careful when disclosing personal details like your address. Meet your date at the restaurant even if he/she insists on picking you up first.

Don’t Google Too Much

Yes, we all stalk our date before meeting in person. It’s natural to want to see as many photos as possible and vet them against the truth of other social media profiles. Don’t dig too deep, skewing your perception before even giving them a chance. It’s good to do your homework, but don’t overdo it.
