Bonsai trees are the world in miniature. Bonsai are the result of a particular form of cultivation meant to produce miniature versions of full-sized trees that retain the shape and scale of the original. These small trees inspire feelings of awe in the onlooker.
The practice is now associated with Japanese culture, but has Chinese origins. The best place to see Bonsai and its tradition is at Shunka-en, the Bonsai Musem in Tokyo. Shunka-en is home to the oldest Bonsai on record, estimated to be 800 years old. If your visit to to Shunke-en inspires you to go down the path of the Bonsai on your own, you need to prepare to get to know your Bonsai since they are more complicated to take care of than your average house plant.
Decide whether or not you want an indoor or an outdoor Bonsai. Bonsai need to stay watered, but you should not overwater them. They need sun, but not too much sun — the bottom line is they need balance. You will need to trim your Bonsai in harmony with its natural growth patterns, so buy some clippers and pay special attention to its movements. Some guidelines for Bonsai care are helpful.
