Tips / Destination

Obviously you can’t leave Brussels without some fantastic Belgian chocolate. Though its chocolate is now available worldwide, the original Neuhaus, founded in 1857, can be discovered right in Grand Place. Plus, the chocolatier claims to be the inventor of the praline, so be sure to buy a few.

The French fry was a Belgian invention, and Brussels serves them piping hot in cones smothered in a sauce of your choice in dozens of spots around the city. However, some do it better than others. Fritland is a popular stop, with decades of loyal followers who appreciate the eatery’s dedication to never using frozen fries; it receives fresh deliveries of potatoes daily. Another is Maison Antoine, which claims to be the best, serving big portions of crispy fries with just the right internal texture. The lines are long, but the wait is worth it.

Moules frites is a Belgian national dish, so be sure to try your fries alongside a batch of mussels at least once during your visit. La Boussole is a favorite option, both for its location and its atmosphere.

Think you’ve had Belgian waffles in the States? Think again. The real thing is far better than any waffle you’ll find at an American brunch. Crispy on the outside, just the right amount of softness on the inside and drizzled with everything from Belgian chocolate to Nutella, you’ll want more than just one. The Waffle Factory Bruxelles has a great location near Grand Place, and awesome prices at just a few euro per waffle.

Of course, you can’t leave Brussels without a taste of beer. If you’d like to try a large variety, and aren’t sure what you’re looking for exactly, Moeder Lambic Original can help you out. With a second location, Moeder Lambic Fountainas, hit up the venue closest to you. With dozens of beers on tap and a knowledgeable staff, you’ll find something you’re sure to love.
