Choosing the Right Piece of Luggage

Tips / Travel

A piece of luggage is like a pet — they tend to take on the personality of their owner. Choosing one suitcase over the next can be crucial. One may weigh you down while another may set you free.

For the Treasure Hunter

Those who tend to seek out foreign oddities and gifts may want to opt for a hard, metal suitcase. While these are often the heaviest pieces of luggage, and may require you to pay an additional fee for surpassing the weight limit, their armored exterior will protect your goods.

For the Boardroom Habitué

While many business travelers tend to wear their suit while they travel, others need a safe place to store their garments. A large, soft suitcase provides enough room to pack suits and shirts without having to overfold and create creases. Packing suits into clear plastic suit bags within the suitcase is another pro move.

For the Pack Rat

Believe it or not, those who have a history of over-packing may want to opt for a smaller suitcase. They can fill the luggage to its capacity without overburdening themselves with extraneous material objects. It might be a leap of faith, but less stuff often leads to more rewarding endeavors outside of the hotel room.

For the Wandering Soul

When traveling across Europe, or roaming from city to city in South America, the duffle bag can be your best friend. These bags can take a beating and fit into any storage area beneath a bus, or overhead compartment on a train. Not having to drag a suitcase around isn’t so bad either.

For the Chameleon

Sometimes, an adventure in a new place is best experienced with a good set of shoes, a hat and a pair of sunglasses. Of course, a small backpack with a couple changes of clothes, a water bottle and a journal might be worth bringing as well.

And, remember: Larger suitcases add weight. Duffels are less prone to rips and tears, but do not protect valuables as well. Hard, metal suitcases are best for valuables
