How to Dress for a Long Flight

Tips / Travel

There are a lot of factors that contribute to making a long flight unpleasant. One you can control, though, is what you wear. By wearing the right type of clothing, you can make a long flight more comfortable and therefore more bearable. Here’s what to look for when getting ready for departure.

Shoes

It’s best to wear flat shoes. That way, all the walking and standing you do before and after the flight does not take its toll on your feet. Also, wear sandals or shoes that can easily be slipped on or off for passing through security and so you can take them off at any period during the flight with ease.

Pants

Sweats can be comfortable, but you won’t look or feel your best when wearing them. It is good to wear looser clothing to avoid deep vein thrombosis and blood clots, though, so opt instead for skirts or straight or wide-leg pants.

Tops

Wear a simple short-sleeve T-shirt or top. Also bring a sweater to layer on top. You’re temperature may fluctuate so it’s best you have short sleeves when you feel warm and something to cover up with when you start to feel chilly. Keep your destination’s climate in mind and bring a jacket to put on when you arrive if you’re going somewhere cold.

Also keep in mind:

  • Avoid wearing too much jewelry and skip it all together if possible. It can hold you up at security and might irritate you while you try to sleep.
  • Don’t wear a bra with a metal underwire. It might become bothersome after a while.
  • Go light on the makeup. It’s most likely just going to get smudged or fade and it might irritate you.
