Tips / Safety

Whether you’re young or old, everyone has to learn how to ski for the first time. There’s no shame in not knowing what you’re doing, and once you get the hang of it skiing is an exciting hobby to take on for years to come. Don’t miss out on one of the best winter activities, follow some of these tips to take with you on the trails and you’ll graduate from the bunny slopes in no time.

What to Wear

First things first, you need to have the proper gear. Nothing ruins a day on the slopes faster than being too cold to stay on the mountain. Layer up in order. Start with thermal pants or long johns, and a thermal top or turtleneck for your undergarments. Make sure to have a long pair of wooly socks for your feet. Next layer with a sweater or fleece, and a neck warmer or face mask. Lastly you’ll need water-resistant snow pants and a ski jacket on top, with a hat and gloves for the final touches. You might feel like an abdominal snowman but you’ll need the extra layers, and the padding for falls doesn’t hurt.

Ski Gear

If it’s your first time skiing and you don’t have gear, I wouldn’t recommend borrowing from a friend. Most ski gear is designed for an individual’s height and weight. Your best bet is to rent directly from the ski resort where they can help you find the right equipment. Always stay safe with ski goggles and a helmet, especially as a beginner.

Hit the Slopes

Make sure to buddy up with a friend (someone you trust to help you up when you fall) and try out either a bunny slope or, if you’re feeling confident, a green circle. Your best friend will be what many refer to as “pizza and French fries.” Shape your skis in a pizza wedge (or V shape) to slow yourself down the mountain, and make wide, zigzagging turns across the mountain. Never go straight down the slope. Try not to cross your skis while doing this. Take breaks to catch up with friends and keep an eye on the trail signs to make sure you’re staying on easy terrain.

Grab a Reward

Reward yourself after all your hard work! Skiing burns calories and will work up quite the appetite. Grab hot cocoa or a beer at the ski lodge and some favorites like Belgium waffles or classic bar food.
