Foodie Culture in Valencia

Tips / Destination

As is the case with most regions in Spain, Valencia is incredibly proud of its culinary history.

The city is said to be the birthplace of paella, the rice-based dish that made its way around the world, but there is more to Valencian cuisine than that. While the majority of dishes are simple, they are known for the freshness of the ingredients.

This is due in large part to the wide belt of fertile agricultural land that surrounds the city, known as La Huerta. With so many different products grown in close proximity to the city, it’s no surprise the ingredients you eat are so fresh.

Another reason for the great strength of Valencian cuisine is the Mediterranean Sea. As a port city, Valencia has access to all of the riches the sea can offer. Popular catches include red mullet, mussels, shrimp, prawns and octopus.

With so many great ingredients found locally, Valencian chefs are spoiled for choice when it comes to preparing dishes. Luckily for locals and visitors, most of the restaurants in town are economical.

Like all great foodie cities, Valencia is big on drinks, too. Agua de Valencia comes in pitchers designed for sharing, and most places keep the exact recipe secret. To give you an idea, it contains cava, orange juice, gin, vodka and sugar. Tuck in!
