Visit Old Havana
The city’s historical district teems with beautiful stone architecture, shopping and dining. Head to the Floridita, a favorite watering hole of Ernest Hemingway, for a daiquiri and a churro before browsing for books, cigars and trinkets at the stores that line the streets. Grab a nightcap at the Hotel Ambos Mundos for a beautiful rooftop view of the city.
Sunbathe at Playas del Este
Nestled to the east of Havana, about a 15-minute drive from the city, lies 10 miles of white beaches. Unlike the shores to Varadero — the most popular tourist attraction that costs too much for Cubans themselves to visit — Playas del Este feels more down-to-earth. Cuban families perch on the shores and drink Cristal (the state light beer), while tourists can rehydrate at many beach-side and hotel bars.
Explore Cuba’s history and culture
Visit Havana’s Fine Arts Museum to peek into the island’s rich academic and cultural history. Then, head across the street to the Revolution Museum to see firsthand how the government perceives its communist history. Because of the island’s intense education system, all tour guides and museum employees know nearly everything about their field — go ahead, ask them ANYTHING.
Take a taxi
Most importantly, tourists (especially Americans) should take advantage of the warmth of the Cuban people and talk to whomever they can. Although the country has been scarred by years of political violence, its people have a lot to say and will tell it to whomever will listen. The best way to meet Cubans is by taking one of their brightly colored taxis, all polished and waiting for tourists along Havana’s stone streets.
