Tips / Travel

For modern day journeymen, checking in is the bane of their existence. More people are becoming travelers as the world becomes increasingly secure, resulting in unpredictable security lines that barely leave you any time to hit duty free. Follow these tips to make your check-in process a little easier.

Prepare

Certain preparations can make your experience smoother. Keep your important documents and boarding pass in a convenient pocket, so you’re not fumbling for them in line. Slip-on shoes and TSA-friendly laptop cases will also make security checks easier. Pack your bags in an organized manner and weigh them to prevent any surprises. Nothing is more frustrating than playing the repacking game at the airport. If you only have a carry-on, consider an advanced check-in online, letting you print your boarding pass at home.

Check status

Be sure to check your flight hasn’t been delayed or cancelled. Most airlines have updates on their websites, and you can go to FlightStats.com or TripIt.com to get text updates. Checking for airport parking is also a good idea. During peak travel season, airport lots can fill up quickly, but many airports are adding parking lot status updates to their website as well.

PreCheck

The Transportation Safety Administration now offers the PreCheck program to expedite the screening process. For $85, you get a five-year membership that allows you get through security without removing your shoes or jackets, and you can keep your laptops and liquids in your carry-on. Certain airports and airlines will also let you enter a separate security line to speed up the process even more. For international travelers, U.S. Customs and Border Protection’s Global Entry helps get through Customs faster.
