Cairo is one of the largest cities of the MENA region, wildly popular with tourists and one of the busiest cities for public transportation. Follow these tips to get around with ease.
Rental Car
A rental car is neither recommended or necessary. The traffic is simply too much for a visitor to navigate. It is possible to get a rental car with a personal driver, just make sure it comes from a reputable service like Cairo Car.
Metro
Cairo’s metro system is clean and modern, despite being the oldest in Africa. There are three lines that cover almost everywhere you would want to go in the city. It stops running around midnight and starts around 6 a.m. There are also two special cars reserved for women.
Taxi
Be sure to use the modern white taxis, which are all metered, run on natural gas and have air conditioning. Some drivers won’t use a meter for short journeys, but try to at least negotiate a price beforehand, adjusting for the number of people and time of day.
Ridesharing
Uber and Careem changed the way people use public transportation in Cairo. For tourists, this might be the best option, since the drivers can usually speak English and the quality is more reliable than traditional taxis.
