The Greek Islands are some of the most beautiful and scenic islands along the European coasts. Known for the crystal-clear waters, dramatic cliffsides and blue-and-white buildings dotting the cliffs, the Greek Islands are a must-see destination. With 6,000 total islands and 227 inhabited ones, there are so many options to choose from. Here are some of the top islands you should add to your itinerary.
Santorini
The most notable and breathtaking of the islands, Santorini should not be skipped on your trip. The dramatic views overlooking the cliffsides into the sparkling Aegean sea will take your breath away. Climb to the top of Thira from a 588-step pathway, or take a donkey up for spectacular views of the island. The sunset over the Caldera (the island’s active volcano) is the most stunning sight of the island, which can be overlooked from many of the popular cliffside restaurants.
Mykonos
If you’re looking for some of the best beaches and active nightlife, hop over to Mykonos — another favorite of the Greek Islands. Mykonos town, a maze of tiny streets and whitewashed buildings, will charm you with its boutiques and cafes and seaside restaurants. At night, clubs like Scorpio and Paradise beach are known to be popular attractions for young partiers, with clubs open until 11 a.m.
Rhodes
For history buffs traveling to Greece, Rhodes is a landmine for historical treasures and sights. The Temple of Apollo and the Medieval Old Town are among the main attractions of the island. Located off the coast of Turkey, there are many Turkish influences found in the charming villages of Rhodes. The architecture of this island is beautiful, and is as much of a sight as the blue sea.
