Compassion and care for animals is something that, according to PETA, we can do be doing whether we’re at home or traveling the world.

The animal protection organization put together a list of ways animal lovers can help care for and protect animals from anywhere in the world without sacrificing some of the best aspects of traveling.

When deciding where to go, where to stay and what to do on a trip, PETA recommends booking your trip with an agency that specializes in animal-friendly travel, such as Humane Travel. If you’re arranging your own trip, be aware of which airlines require safe animal practices, such as Delta Air Lines, United Airlines, China Southern and EL AL Israel Airlines.

PETA also recommends requesting down-free pillows and comforters, so you can sleep easily knowing you’re doing your part in protecting ducks, geese and other birds. Many hotels offer luxurious, cruelty-free shampoos, soaps and lotions, so try and book your stay at one of these hotels, or pack your own personal care products. PETA.org has a list of companies that do not practice animal testing on products.

When it comes to dining, it’s now easier than ever to find restaurants, shops and cafés that offer vegan options, so opt for these when possible. HappyCow can help locate vegan and vegan-friendly restaurants around the world, and the Veganagogo translation app covers 50 languages, making it easier to order in many countries. Regardless, learning how to say, “I’m a vegan” in the local language is important before arriving.

While there are some amazing wildlife attractions around the world, the sad truth is many are treating animals poorly. Seek out parks, nature reserves, beaches and accredited wildlife sanctuaries where animals can be found thriving, not exploited. If the beach is on your itinerary, keep your eyes peeled for trash that could harm or entangle animals. This is a small effort that could make a huge difference.

Finally, PETA recommends always being prepared to help an animal in need. Ask about local shelters and carry a can of food for a hungry cat or dog, or perhaps even set aside some money to help a local humane society that finds homes for animals.
