How Fresh is Airline Food?

If you’ve ever wondered how your food gets on an airplane and when it was prepared, you’re not alone.

The mysteries of airline food were recently solved by a flight attendant speaking to Quora. He said the food is definitely not fresh, and it’s terribly unhealthy.

“The food on your tray is prepared not in the galley but in the aircraft catering,” Shreyas P. said, “which is often done 12 hours before and even days before the aircraft departure.

“Now, how many such industries do you know where the hot or cold meal was made days before you consume it?

“That cut fruit which is on your tray still looks fresh, and how is that possible when it was cut hours before the departure, have you ever wondered?”

The eggs served in many airline breakfasts are probably not just eggs alone — other substances may be mixed in.

And, there are lots of additives, including spices, salt and fats in the food served on airplanes. Because flying actually affects how you taste your food. And this can make them unhealthy.

“Most of us aren’t aware of this, but in addition to making your ears pop, it causes our tastebuds and sense of smell to go partially numb, compared to on ground,” continued Shreyas. The numbing effect “has major impact on how food tastes and smells.”
