Trying to navigate a foreign country can be difficult, especially when there are language, currency and customs barriers. Navigating a new country’s roads can be even more tricky. If you’re planning on renting a vehicle to explore your next destination, follow the tips below for a seamless ride.
Get insured
The last thing you want to happen is to end up in an accident with a foreigner and not be able to provide insurance information. Many American auto insurance companies have international coverage, but it is wise to double check with your provider before you set sail.
Permit or no permit?
Some countries require an international driving permit, but some simply ask for your state-issued driver’s license. Do the research ahead of time so you’re not left in the dust.
Rent before you go
To ensure all your bases are covered, it’s best to arrange your rental car before you even leave home. This way, you know you can prepare all the necessary documents and you can be sure you understand all the terms and conditions before entering a non-English zone. What’s more, rental rates are usually cheaper when you reserve from the United States.
Know the rules
Does the country have minimum and maximum driving ages? What are the rules of the road? What do the signs mean? Try to learn as much as you can before you arrive so you’re not stuck on the side of the road using Google translator to decipher a road sign.
