No one wants their vacation interrupted by a hurricane, but sometimes these things can’t be avoided, so it’s best to be prepared. Areas surrounded by water, such as islands or peninsulas, are more susceptible to hurricanes and, if you’re traveling to a place like this, read up on what to do for an emergency situation.
During a hurricane, you should stay indoors because the strong winds will blow things around. This rule is only if the hurricane is a low enough category you are able to stay in the area until it blows over. If the weather is predicting a high-category hurricane, evacuate the area. Your life is more important than a vacation. However, if it’s not a strong hurricane, stay indoors and do not venture outside until the hurricane is over.
Stay away from low-lying and flood-prone areas. These areas will fill up with water first and will be the most dangerous. If your home, hotel or resort is not on higher ground, find a shelter nearby on higher ground. The water could potentially separate people in your group or cause damage so it’s best to avoid the areas most prone to flooding.
After a hurricane, be wary of water. Don’t go near standing water because it might be electrically charged from underground or downed power lines. Keep an eye out for flooding that can happen even after the hurricane is over. Wait for officials to say it’s safe to go outside and use water.
