Yes, it is possible to pack everything you need for a trip, even an overseas trip, in one deceptively small carry-on. Think of the positives. The airline won’t lose your luggage. Valuables will be safer because you’ll have your carry-on with you at all times. And you won’t need to lug a huge suitcase onto trains and taxis. Read these tips to find out how to downsize your packing.
Keep Calm and Carry-On.
Before you pack, read your airline’s regulations for size and weight of carry-ons. If you don’t have one already, purchase the largest carry-on they permit. The best ones also have tons of pockets and elastic straps inside.
Clothes Call.
Pack clothes that are from similar color families. You can’t go wrong with blue and black. Also, include clothes that are washable and don’t wrinkle easily (bring powdered detergent and wash clothes in a bathtub). Extra points if you pack pieces that can transition from casual to dressy and can be layered for different temperatures.
All About Accessories.
An outfit can easily go from day to night with the right accessories. Pack a couple pretty pieces of jewelry and/or a pashmina (wear the pashmina on the plane to save space, and you can also use it as a blanket).
Wrap It Up.
Just roll with it — literally. Roll your clothes as tightly as you can. Purchase Velcro strips to keep the rolls nice and tight.
Bonus Bag.
If your airline allows a personal item in addition to your carry-on, bring a large purse with several pockets. It’s a great place to stash makeup, books and souvenirs. And you’re off on your vacation, you little minimalist you.
