Tips / Destination

For many years now, a community of Latin Americans have made its mark on the Big Apple.

After spending many years as the largest Latino population in New York, Puerto Ricans were displaced by Dominicans in more recent times. The influence of both nationalities can be seen throughout New York, and there is also a significant community of Mexicans.

In terms of the areas in which to find Latin businesses and restaurants, there are plenty to choose. Dominicans are a significant presence in Washington Heights and Inwood, while Puerto Rican culture is prominent in East Harlem. Interestingly, there are also highly concentrated communities of Ecuadoreans and Colombians in Queens.

Head down to any of these neighborhoods to take in the restaurants and bars of the community, or head to one of the growing band of fusion restaurants around town for a more upscale Latin American dining experience. Some of the best include Yerba Buena and Café Habana, both of which take you on a culinary tour of Latin America.

For a slice of history, head over to La Fonda in Harlem. This family favorite has been in business for over a quarter of a century, and it’s not hard to see why. Another great option is Café Ollin, which has huge portions of lesser-seen items, such as cow tongue nachos and goat tortas.
