Tips / Destination

Located only five hours east of Mexico City on the Gulf of Mexico, Veracruz is a popular destination for locals but is an off-the-radar destination for international tourists, making it the ideal choice for travelers looking for a new experience.

Veracruz boasts pockets of colonial history, fascinating archaeological sites and a vibrant, eclectic culture.

Food lovers can enjoy some of the best seafood anywhere in the world, and history lovers can explore the impressive ruins of Cempoala and El Tajín, which flourished from the 9th to the 13th centuries. If you plan on visiting the stunning ruins, consider staying in Xalapa, the state’s capital. From here, it’s a short trip to the ruins and surrounding picturesque mountain village.

The best way to experience Veracruz is to simply dive in. Walk the cobblestone streets, interact with welcoming locals, grab a cup of lechero or enjoy a seafood feast at the open-air Mariscos Villa Rica Mocambo restaurant and partake in the state’s renowned nightlife.

One of the best times to visit Veracruz, to make the most of your visit, is during Carnaval, the region’s major pre-Lenten festival held the week before Ash Wednesday. The Carnaval features daily parades, traditional music, dancing in the streets and some of the best street food you’ll find anywhere in Latin America. If you do plan on visiting during Carnaval, be sure to book your accommodations in advance.

Veracruz is a small state, making it easy to traverse via car. Start in the lively Veracruz City, and then explore the colonial-era towns, such as La Antigua and Tlacotalpan. Cabs are also easy to find and inexpensive, and the Boca del Rio bus goes across the Boulevard of the City to the downtown Boca del Rio, a modern city joined with Veracruz.

From great food and music, to historic sites and beautiful beaches, Veracruz is a great option to visit on its own or as a weekend getaway from Mexico City.

No, it’s not Monterey Bay. We’re talking Morro Bay, California, located about a 2.5-hour drive to the south, about halfway between San Jose and Los Angeles. A quieter destination, Morro Bay offers plenty for the outdoor adventurer to enjoy.
