Before you say it, yes, I’m well aware pasta is likely the most cooked item in hostels that offer the use of kitchens to guests. All too often, I’ve cringed when I look at travelers opening a jar of pasta sauce and a bag of dried pasta and calling that dinner. While not uncommon to see people make a sauce from scratch, especially if there is a market nearby or even a supermarket, I’m talking about making your own pasta. You know, floor, water, olive oil and eggs, depending on your recipe, but it’s pretty safe to say we’re talking about a need for flour, eggs and a bit of time.
While some people find a catharsis in cleaning, I’m certainly not one of them. I do love to cook and there is certainly something cathartic in making your own pasta. Now, it’s certainly not worth the effort if you’re simply going to open a jar of Prego or Ragu. Additionally, making pasta is just impressive, a great conversation starter and a road to a potential hook up.
I’m not suggesting you travel with a rolling pin — things easily found in a hostel will work just fine if you cant find a rolling pin. But, be prepared to bring a few things from home with you. A pasta wheel, a collapsible drying rack and/or a ravioli kit actually take up nearly no weight or space in your suitcase if packed with thought and the potential benefits of impressing others, sharing your food and just eating well might make them worthwhile travel companions.
