Tips / Destination

Grass is always greener syndrome is real. In today’s world, it is tempting to pack a bag and head for the hills. Some call this escapism, others call this a necessary course of action. The question is always where to go, for how long and how? If you are going to make a move, why not make it a bold one?

Although New Zealand is far away from almost anywhere, it is getting even more good press than usual lately. It is beautiful, friendly and interesting. It is also a relatively affordable place to be while trying to get your finances in order after moving to a new country. Perhaps you haven’t fully committed to a new nationality; nonetheless, here are some key things to know if you decide to take the plunge.

Decide why you would like an extended stay in New Zealand and apply for the appropriate visa. This can vary from seeking work to a long-term research project/or educational opportunity. It also includes moving closer to family if this is an option for you. Once you have zeroed in on your motivation (listing “escape” is not usually enough for most governments), then you can apply for a visa that will allow you a longer stay than your status as a tourist allows. Don’t worry about knowing whether or not you want to live in New Zealand permanently, this is a path to citizenship you can pull out of if you decide this is not for you.

One good option is the Long-Term Skill Shortage Work Visa. This can allow you to work legally in the country for up to 30 months and, after two years, you can apply for permanent residency. Here is a list of skills for which there is a shortage. Note, if you have dependents they will require their own visa in order to make the move. The New Zealand Immigration Website is helpful.

Going the Distance: Which Airports Have the Longest Walks?

You’re in between flights and ready to find a coffee and your next gate and settle in. But then you find the signs to your gate and look down the impossibly long corridor and wonder how you managed to have the gate at the opposite end of the airport.
