Tips / Travel

Packing a suitcase for a tropical climate is typically as easy as tossing in a few swimsuits and flip flops, while packing for a ski trip usually involves heavy sweaters, jackets and handfuls of long socks. But what if your vacation destination is a mixture of climates, or you’re traveling during a shoulder season when temperatures can vary as much as flight prices? Here are a few suggestions for what to pack when traveling to unpredictable climates.

Layers

This comes as no surprise as packing and wearing layers will ensure you’ll be able to make yourself comfortable in all types of temperatures. For days spent touring through cities or towns, consider a pair of light pants, a short-sleeved shirt and a light jacket or sweater. Toss in a scarf in case the wind decides to pick up.

Rain Gear

Unpredictable climates don’t discriminate against nasty weather. When an unexpected rainstorm hits, make sure you’re prepared with a decent raincoat or poncho, plus a small, collapsible umbrella. While a pair of rain boots may not be realistic, take the material of your shoes into consideration when packing footwear. Make sure you have at least one pair of weather-proof shoes.

Wardrobe Staples

It can be tempting to pack statement pieces from your wardrobe to step out in style while traveling abroad, but if you’re heading for uncertain temperatures, sticking to the basics is your best bet. T-shirts, leggings, jeans and a comfortable pair of walking shoes help you keep it simple and eliminate bulky luggage.
