A New Year, a new calendar to fill with plenty of exciting trips to fascinating destinations around the world.
For anyone with the travel bug, January is the time to start thinking about where to go next. For those in the northern hemisphere, the first few months can be the grimmest of the year in terms of weather, inspiring plans to escape the cold for warmer climes.
If you are traveling on a budget, there are a number of things to consider when booking a holiday. First of all, avoid school holidays like the plague. Prices skyrocket and popular destinations become overly crowded, so travel outside Easter and summer holidays if possible.
Second, check for large sporting events or other special occasions. Travel when your destination of choice is quieter and you’ll have a more economical trip.
That said, if you are traveling for a specific event, such as a music festival or national holiday, book as early as possible. You won’t be able to avoid price rises entirely, but you’ll avoid the worst of the spikes if you are organized.
Planning ahead is vital in others ways as well. Weather is an important consideration, so check whether there are regular hurricane, monsoon or extreme weather seasons in the places you want to go.
Anyone planning a longer trip will have to think about the conditions in each of the places on route. For example you might want to avoid rainy season in the Amazon, but it could coincide with the best time for climbing the Andes. In these cases you will need to prioritize certain activities.
The only thing more exciting than planning a trip is going on one, so enjoy it. However, it does pay to plan thoroughly in order to avoid disappointment.
