It’s the season of wintry weather and canceled flights. The last thing travelers hope to deal with is a delay as vacations, business meetings, family and other important events await on the other side of flights.
How to avoid the unexpected Mother Nature? Well, unfortunately you can’t, but we have compiled a few tips to possibly help prepare and avoid canceled flights.
Opt for Morning Flights
Try to schedule a flight that leaves in the morning because they are less likely to be canceled or delayed than those in the evening. Bad weather accumulates as the day goes on and flight delays and cancelations have a domino effect, resulting in an increasing number of planes delayed for take-off and landing.
Pay Attention to Weather Forecasts
Check the weather before you leave for the airport, before departing and in your arrival city. You may be able to contact the airline to request an earlier flight if bad weather is approaching. A ripple effect occurs when there is extreme weather anywhere.
Use the Airline’s 800 Number
Even if you’re at the airport and need assistance with your flight, call the airline’s customer service number. Standing in line with everyone else at the airport to receive information on delayed or canceled flights will likely add to any wait you’re experiencing.
Think About Hotel Reservations
You can’t help a canceled flight; be sure to call the hotel in your arrival city to make changes in your arrival time or check-in date. Also take into consideration nearby accommodations if your outbound flight is delayed overnight. You may have to act fast to book a room because chances are there are other canceled flights.
Have a Change of Clothes
If your flight is canceled, you’ll either be spending the night in the airport, a local hotel or, if you’re lucky, at your home. If you’re unfortunate enough to have to sleep on the airport floor, be sure you have a change of clothes and any medications or toiletries you may need for the next morning.
Invest in Travel Insurance
If you’re concerned with costs associated with bad weather, you may consider purchasing travel insurance. Be sure to ask ahead of time if your policy covers bad weather.
