Bulking season doesn’t mean you get to skip cardio. If you’re not one to use a treadmill, follow these tips for running in the wintertime.
Plot a Course
Colleges and universities often have their own maintenance team instead of using the city’s, so they’re often the first place to have clear paths after a storm. If you have to run on a road, try to do it against traffic and mind the snow banks. Shorter days mean you need to wear bright colors or, better yet, a reflective vest at night.
Dress Right
Wear clothes as if it’s 10–15 degrees warmer than what it really is to avoid overheating. You’ll feel cold in the beginning, but not once you’re moving. For a little extra protection, wear a hat and some running gloves (but not your thick wool ones). If you’re running in an area often covered with snow or ice, find a pair with extra traction or pick up an accessory like YakTrax, attachable cleats for regular shoes.
Stay Healthy
Just because it’s cold doesn’t mean your body isn’t using as much water, so remember to hydrate as much as you do in the heat. If you have severe allergies or sensitivity to cold air, consider running with a mask like Galen Rupp’s, though some people might think you’re Bane from Dark Knight Rises. On your run, take extra time to warm up and shorten your stride to avoid slipping.
