Safest Ways for Women to Travel Solo in India

Safety

The image of India as a travel destination isn’t always pristine. With reports of violence — especially toward women — commonly found, it’s not the first place solo female travelers might think to explore. But to miss out on the culture, cuisine and wonder of India is a crime unto itself.

Some areas are safer than others.

Although it would be nice to say the rumors aren’t true, there are some areas that you should be extra cautious in or avoid altogether. The interactive website SafeCity currently shows New Delhi and Mumbai as the highest ranked. This isn’t to say don’t go there, but know your risks.

Dress conservatively

Especially in the Kerala and Punjab districts, be sure to cover your shoulders, wear either long skirts or loose pants and ditch the plunging necklines. Headscarves aren’t generally necessary, but carrying one as a back-up isn’t a bad idea.

Wander with care

Take a map or pay a little extra for a reliable cab — getting lost in the winding streets of Rome is one thing, but not the smartest idea when you’re flying solo in India. Keep your head on straight and if you feel the slightest bit uncomfortable, listen and immediately get to safety. Never dismiss your gut.

Make friends

Women are everywhere. The Western world tends to forget about this community, but it’s your best resource when alone. Make friends with the women in your guesthouse or the owner of your new favorite shop. These women can become travel buddies or, at least, someone to have a meal with. They may even have local tips to help you navigate your goal of a safe adventure.

The Argosaronic Islands Are Calling

The Saronic or Argo Saronic Islands of Greece call travelers to explore its seven small islands and islets brimming with history, natural sites and more. With most easily accessible by boat, the islands’ proximity to ports of Athens make the Saronic Islands an ideal destination for those preferring shorter boat rides. In fact, trips from Athens ports to the islands take only between 10 minutes and two hours, depending on the island you choose, making them perfect for day or weekend trips.
