Handling a winter blizzard while on the road won’t be as frightful or intimidating as it may seem. If you’re stranded in a destination, or forced to take shelter in your hotel for the duration of a storm, there are simple precautions you need to take to make your time indoors safe and comfortable.
Be aware of the possibility of a power outage.
To be prepared, have some emergency bags of ice in the freezer to keep perishables cold if the refrigerator cuts out, and invest in a battery-operated space heater. Make sure to fully charge all of your electronics, and if you have a car, you’ll also want to have a full tank of gas.
Stock up on groceries beforehand.
There’s a good chance stores will be closed the day after a storm while everyone digs themselves out. Make sure to invest in the basics and essentials. For example, water bottles, a bushel of apples, bread, peanut butter and jelly and microwavable soup. Also beer and Doritos (or wine and cheese, if you want to keep it classy.)
Have alternatives to the Internet prepared.
God forbid you need to resort to Texas Hold’em, Monopoly or DVDs … but you may have to resort to Texas Hold’em, Monopoly or DVDs. If the storm kicks up enough to diffuse the Internet signal (or cut the power), entertainment via the 20th century should provide a quick fix.
