There are plenty of factors that can affect how difficult it is to set up your tent, but wind has to be the most important. After a long day on the trail, it’s only natural to want to set up your shelter and relax. High winds can make that a more daunting prospect than normal, but with these tips you’ll be able to put your tent up without any issues.
First, pick a site with the narrowest part of your tent facing into the wind and preferably down any slope. Make sure your heavy pieces of gear are within easy reach to weigh down your tent.
Next, make sure your tent poles are properly set up, and the stakes are in your pocket, so you can set up the essential parts quickly. Stake the part of the tent facing into the wind first, before putting the poles into the position.
Once the tent is weighed down with heavy objects and all of the poles are in place and staked, it’s time to put the fly over the top. Again, it’s important to start with the side facing into the wind, pegging down each side securely.
The last stage is to ensure your guy ropes are extended properly to prevent any annoying flapping during the night. Job done.
