Where to Stay in Marrakech’s Medina

Morocco is a popular gateway to the Middle East for America and Europe. Many of the new hotels are located outside of the Old City Walls, but for a true Moroccan experience, you should book a stay within the Medina.

Art Place Hotel & Riad

Many hotels in Marrakech are in the style of a riad, open-air houses with rooms surrounding a central courtyard. One such hotel is Art Place, located right in the corner of Jemma al-Fna, giving you easy access to the market, souks and outdoor cafes.

Hotel Cecil

For a balance between price and amenities, Hotel Cecil is only a stone’s throw from the main square. Rooms are a little basic, but also clean and safe. Some rooms use a shared bathroom, but the private suites aren’t priced that much higher.

Riad 72

Riad 72 is a boutique hotel with a modern twist on the traditional Moroccan home, located about 15 minutes away from Jemma al-Fna by foot. Milanese photographer Giovanna Cinel, who moved to the city to start her riad, founded the hotel, providing a slew of amenities like a private courtyard, a rooftop pool and hammam.

Rainbow Hostel

If you’re looking for a cheaper place, Rainbow Hostel is popular with backpackers for its location in the middle of the souk and guided tours organized by the staff (much better than hiring a day guide off the street). Be sure to stay for the traditional Moroccan breakfast served every morning.
