Even if you’re generally active and healthy, consecutive days on the hiking trails can take a serious toll on your feet and take away from the experience.
As with many health issues, prevention is better than a cure when it comes to keeping your feet healthy. Before setting off on a long hike, make sure your toenails are properly trimmed for length with no sharp edges. Long nails can cause pain as they press against your boots, while sharp edges can cut other toes and cause bleeding.
Long-distance runners swear by the benefits of lubricating the feet before setting off, and hikers should do the same. Use Vaseline or a similar lubricant on your toes and heels to prevent blisters. It is surely common sense for most people that hiking shoes should be properly fitted, but many negate the benefits of expensive shoes by tying them loosely. A tightly-tied shoe will stay in position, preventing blisters.
Socks are equally important. Be extra careful not to wear anything made entirely of cotton or with any ridges in it, and opt instead for a wool-synthetic blend from a reputable brand.
Many hikers can attest to the fact they ignore slight discomfort in the feet, whether due to laziness or a mistaken belief it will not develop into anything more serious. They could not be more wrong, and it is essential to remove your shoe at the first sign of discomfort to prevent more serious developments.
Last but not least, take proper care of your feet at the end of the day. Washing, drying and powdering your feet will give them the best chance of recovering for the next day, while also preventing infections.
