A new photo-mapping website released a series of seven interactive photo experiences that allow users to digitally explore remote destinations like Easter Island and the Rothera Research Station in Antarctica. The site, called Mappilary, archives 360-degree photos from the locations and allows users to digitally tour them.
Among the places you can tour are Saint Paul Island in Alaska, about the size of San Francisco but with only one school, one post office, one bar and one small store.
Then there’s Nuku’alofa, Tonga, and Havana, Cuba, whose maps haven’t been updated since 1965. You can also visit Svalbard, Norway, a set of islands close to the North Pole that have so many marauding polar bears residents and visitors are advised to carry firearms for protection.
Pokhara, Nepal, is famous as a hub for extreme water sports and for its scenic location between lakes and mountains. Also on the list is the Rothera Research Centre in Antarctica, a British station at the bottom of the earth. And finally there’s Easter Island, Chile, famous for its remote location and 900 monumental statues called moai.
Most of these locations are not available on Google Street View or Google Maps.
