Tips / Travel

Aurora Borealis, more commonly known as the Northern Lights, is a phenomenon that often graces travelers’ bucket lists. This celestial sight is unlike any other but its presence depends on a few factors such as the time of the year, the current weather conditions and the clarity of the atmosphere. For your best chance to see this natural wonder, schedule daytrips from the following destinations.

Iceland

The winter months on this island nation in the North Atlantic only see a few hours of sunlight. While staying close to the capital of Reykjavik may be challenging because of the glowing city lights, head north to Akureyri for a better chance to see the Northern Lights. Tours are available from both cities.

Norway

It is difficult to travel further north than the Norwegian archipelago of Svalbard where the sun hibernates for months at a time between November and February. Celestial phenomena chasers can also hope to experience Polar Night, when the night lasts for more than 24 hours.

Canada

The northern regions of Canada are even further and more expensive to access than European destinations, but this area of the country is prime for Northern Lights spotting. Without large cities nearby, there is no chance manmade light will disrupt the dark skies.

If flying to a freezing and remote location is not to your liking, areas surrounding the city of Edinburgh offer chances to view the Northern Lights as well. Look for day (or night) trips north to the Scottish coastline.
