Duct tape, whiskey and garbage bags … three things one would not immediately think to bring on a backcountry getaway, but in a critical situation, it could save your butt, if not your life. Here are a few tips on how to utilize each item.

Duct Tape

It’s always good to carry a little bit of duct tape. You can wrap a few rolls around your water bottle or another round/oval object.

If you have a rip in your tent, sleeping bag, jacket, you can always cover it with the tape.

If you have a blister forming, need extra shoe padding or need to patch up a hole, duct tape will take care of it. You can also use the tape to make a bandage, splint or arm sling. You can really get creative. You can even make a cup out of duct tape.

Whiskey

Whiskey is great in many cases. Not only is it great for a quick warm up, but it can help with falling asleep in a place where you might be surrounded by a group of snorers. Most of all, it’s a great way to ease with any digestive problems or bacteria present in the stomach and serves its purpose as a disinfectant.

Garbage Bags

Yes, it’s excellent for storing trash, but bags can also be used as a liner inside your rucksack. You can lay a garbage bag under or over your sleeping bag for better insulation. It can be used as an extra layer under your jacket, and can be taped together to form a tarp or shelter.

All three items can come in handy in a sticky situation, so next time pack some tape, whiskey and garbage bags, and practice creatively utilizing them on your expeditions.
