Let’s face it … lodge food can be quite a dissatisfying in many places. In most cases it is fried, greasy, stale and just outright terrible, not to even mention the high prices.
Packing a lunch and snack is a great way to save some money and have better options that are healthier for you. Besides the usual suspects — the granola bar, trail mix, peanut butter and jelly sandwich and the occasional apple or banana — here are a few fantastic and healthy options for a quick energy boost on the trail.
Breakfast:
- Hard-boiled eggs
- Protein brownies/balls
- Oats overnight (prepare ahead in a Tupperware container and pack in your backpack)
- Bagel with butter or cream cheese
Snacks:
- Baby carrots and celery
- String cheese or Babybel cheese
- Beef jerky
- Fruit leather
- Almond butter packets
Lunch:
- Spinach tortilla-wrapped chicken strip (leave the condiments out)
- Hummus and veggie sandwich (Good veggies: cucumber, carrot, sprouts, radishes; avoid anything juicy that will mush like tomato)
- Rice bowl, pasta salad or drinkable soup
Hint: It’s a good idea to pack in Tupperware versus plastic bags so your snacks won’t mush.
Many lodges have a microwave and water fountain so there is always an option to heat up whatever you bring.
